Over the past two days I saw 8 campaign workers for Barack Obama going door to door. Six were on my mail route and two were in my neighborhood. Out of the eight people, five were women and three were men. Six were white and two were black. Black people only account for 13% of the American population. If only Blacks voted for Obama he would have surely lost.
I have never seen someone from a presidential campaign have his representatives go door to door. So what does it mean? It means that Mr. Obama found a way to connect with people from all walks of life.
For my brothers and sisters of other races, please understand the minority perspective. I have had an elderly white woman clutch her purse as I walked across a grocery store parking lot. I have had a white Pastor justify and explain racism in America by calling it the result of the curse of Ham (which is false). I have seen the anger and frustration in my mother's face as she talked of white customers throwing change at her instead of handing it to her. I have been called nigger by a white classmate in high school. I have read racially insensitive email that was sent to my wife by "Christian friends." I along with other Blacks did not know if this day would ever come, considering the history and legacy of the USA.
So what is the lesson? If Blacks and Whites can unite and campaign for Obama, why can't we see unity in the Church among Blacks and Whites? Indeed it appears that the children of the world are wiser than the children of light.

J! You have a very good outlook on Tuesday's events. I am not sure if I am calm enough to have a cogent discussion about it. I am going on another media fast.
All I can say and feel comfortable saying is God's will was done.
Mike, we indeed have seen our share of racism and racial insensitivities in our life time. I remember when I first joined the Army in 1986, how a rich, white fellow soldier felt it acceptable to say to me that I was his "favorite nigger". Being from Los Angeles and growing up in the "hood", that was not acceptable. I held my peace. Really I did! But I educated him on what not to do again.
In light of President Obama winning this historical election, he captured the essence of "getting the message out". So then if he understood that door knocking, and phone calls, and infomercials, and a unified effort of all races to get people to come together for a change, what then is our reluctancy? As christians, we seem afraid to tell others about Christ outside of church. As Blacks, we sometimes seem to be aloof and self-centered, except when we have a "black" crisis.
Personally, I believe this historic movement will expose the hypocrisy of all races, mindsets, beliefs, and interactions throughout the world. At the same time it will demonstrate the inner and social strength that has always lied within, but may have laid dormant in our own lives.
I almost kept our children home from school because we did not know the reaction of whites that attend their school. But I had to remeber that it is God that keeps them, and He is not the God that gives the spirit of fear. So I prayed over them and sent them to school.
Our time has come. Our responsibility is great and the journey will not be easy. But with God all things are possible!
